about

The Euphorians formed out of the band put together to release the David P. Smith album, Mantennae (Northern Electric). The band was large, unwieldy, complicated and seemed fated to disintegrate so a series of focused rehearsals were followed by two shows and this album was recorded live off the floor in the band's basement rehearsal space.

Track Name: The Lonely Astronaut
The astronaut stands on the shores of an alien sea
believes he can hear the children, laughing now with glee
But in the realm of irrational perception
he was once crowned national champion
while the commotion caused by his emotions
made him renowned in his hometown

When he left home he became well known
for sporting a massive biblical beard
until that fateful night he was trussed and sheared
by a drunken balladeer
It was then that he decided to travel to the stars
leave behind this world of buildings, pocketbooks, and cars

In a world where the sky is green and the trees are blue
and there's no one for a trillion miles but you
it's wise to double-check your supplies
and remember
it takes gravity to cry

What a waste, what a waste
when your tears float into space
instead of falling
instead of falling down your face
what a waste, what a waste

Now Nature abhors a crybaby
as much as She abhors a vacuum
so astronauts you must not succumb
to the commotion of your emotions

I'm a stranger here on this place called Earth
and I was sent down here to discover my worth
I'am a stranger here on this place called Earth
and I was sent down here to discover my worth
Track Name: Bouncy Castles
I made a profession out of earnest confession
I was thinking to myself "man, I got it made"
as I spiralled down and out of a flesh-coloured parkade
on my way to the land of bouncy castles
where life's rich pageant exceeds television
on my way to the land of red wine by the box
where I throw away the locks
and I throw away the keys
always do exactly as I please
throw away the locks
throw away the keys
always do exactly as I please

I can't stand it
sleeping on the ground of the coldest planet
in the universe
and what's worse
this planet don't even qualify to be a planet
dammit
I can't stand it

Have you heard the news if you did you prob'ly got the blues
just turn on your TV and you'll see
when the clouds devour the sky then the birds and butterflies will die
what will happen is they'll drown
tattered wings and broken bodies fall to the ground
where they carpet the asphalt where spoked light standards sprout
where the crack whores roam on high heeled bones
thrust their jaws to heaven and moan
and moan

They took a a taser, a medical laser, and an antiquated phaser
hooked the electrodes to my knees
a peck on the cheek and a little squeeze
then they blasted my ass due south
upon arrival they hosed the vomit out of my mouth
Then they tucked me in a bed where every ridiculous thing I ever said
when I was three sheets to the wind
was played on a tape over and over again
when I could no longer hack it they buttoned up my special jacket

Then they put me on a jet ski
commandeered by Dostoyevsky
he said son we're on mission up the river to discover the HEART
of the human condition
and I have it sound authority that when we get there
we'll find some pretty good fishin'

And we'll throw away the locks
throw away the keys
always do exactly as we please
Throw away the locks
throw away the keys
always do exactly as we please
Track Name: The Good Mule
The crazy adventure
was less adventure, more ordeal
was less crazy than it was senseless
mundane and uneventful

I could scratch a grain of truth
from the hard scrabble of the day
it's my nature to persevere
I'm a good mule
I'm a good mule

And suddenly
I was one degree fatter
suddenly
I was one degree sadder
suddenly
I was closer to the dirt
suddenly
I was travelling beneath the earth
suddenly
I was flying in the sky
where the birds in heaven could hear my sad cries

The road to ordinary
is one paved with pavement
no medals are awarded
for getting out of bed
and nobody clapped when I flapped my tongue

And suddenly
I was silent and slobbery
a victim
of incremental robbery
suddenly
my tongue fell out on the ground
and suddenly there was no more sound
Track Name: Rivers and Canyons
this is a song
this is a song
this is a song
of rivers and canyons
where I long to go
while I still have the time

green lights are glowing apples
falling in sequence
illuminating the road
out of this town
into the darkness
and over the abyss
into bliss

this is a song
this is a song
this is a song
of rivers and canyons
where I long to go
while I still have the time
Track Name: Highwayism
Magpies fill the air
tawny deer is crouched in the tall dry grass
while the painted lines on the highway race past
I try to find my mind on the dotted line
somewhere between a shit-hole and paradise
And if I'd had the balls to roll the dice
I wouldn't be sitting here holding back the tears
in my eyes
See workin' for the Man was never the plan
but months became years and hopes became fears
and money ain't free and suddenly you see
the ending of the story and it ain't the way
it's supposed to be

And the body starts to crumble
the songs become a mumble

And my head is a balloon on a string bobbing fiercely in the wind
out the window while a mandolin plays on the radio
and who knew the sky could be so blue and the sun-dappled leaves on the pulsating trees could wash away the city and the shadow of the Man and help me remember who I am

I must have had a wicked childhood
I must have had miserable youth
but sometime in my wicked, miserable past
there must have been a moment of truth

And I'm too old and ugly to be cool and young
there's a million and seventeen songs I've sung
with my strap-on lung and my preacher son tongue but for everything I've done it seems I got nowhere
But I've tried to do things my way
while I keep dreaming of the highway and working for the Fridays and when people say "why Dave" I say
I don't know
I just go
and keep on keepin' on

I've tried to do things my way
I keep dreaming of the highway
and when people say "why Dave"
I say I don't know
I just go
and keep on keepin on

I keep on
I keep on
I keep on
rollin'
I keep on rollin'
I keep on rollin'
down the highway
Track Name: Skeleton
The skeleton in my closet, he knows how to party
Down by the river, amongst the debris
There we discuss alien conspiracies
Trailer park lesbians and UFC
And how it feels to see your reflection
In a glass of whisky

Whisky rivers swum like public pool lengths
Dreamlessly sinking in quicksand beds
Unresolved nights became resolute dawns
Angry sparrows twittered as the sun grew strong
Days begun orange, then turned to blue
With periods of brown forecast for the afternoon

Fat robins feast on freshly turned worms
Starlings flit and swoop like sci-fi insect swarms
A little brown sparrow lies still on the street
Near the passenger door to the left of my feet
Maybe, maybe, maybe he’s asleep.

The skeleton in my closet likes to go out on the town
Likes to paint it red, really likes to get down
Sometimes he gets so down I find him crawling around
And I say
If you piss in the carburetor, the car will stall
If you piss on the temple floor, the walls will fall
You can piss your pants, buddy it’s your call
You can do what you want
I’ll pick you up when you fall

The digital satellite unit casts a hideous shadow on the house
While I recline on the sofa in the costume of a louse
While on the tv, weeping women flee
The good doctor eats a live chimpanzee
And the air is alive with flea’s disease

The skeleton in my closet pulls me aside
Says “brother got a minute, I need to confide
see, my dreams all cower like scared cats in the rain
and I don’t mind feeling numb cause it means I don’t feel pain
but it scares me being numb, case I don’t feel again”

It was a sad goodbye to the jugglers and clowns
I went working for the Man in a Jackhammer Town
I have a daughter and I have a wife
This is the foundation on which I build my life

The skeleton in my closet says he’s been feeling tired
Says it hard to care, says he feels uninspired
And I tell him
Put your pants on one leg at a time
Open the curtains, let the sun shine
Every minute in the world a hundred and ten people are dying
Sing a song, stop crying
Sing a song, stop crying
Sing a song, stop crying
Track Name: New Blues #1
I drank so much whisky
I could not walk or speak
I drank so much whisky
I could neither walk nor speak
I woke up in the morning
And I said
This is not the path I seek

Stepped outside my door
The sun said ‘I’m too low to shine
Stepped outside my door
The sun said ‘I’m too low to shine’
What’s a man to do
About the storm clouds
Gathered round his mind

When the sun crawled up
He was shining angry and bright
When the sun climbed up in the sky
He was shining angry and bright
My head was on fire
And I was blinded
Blinded by the light

The night fell black
Like a great weight from the sky
The night fell black
Like a great weight from the sky
I felt so all alone
But I was too empty
Too empty to cry
