Highwayism

from The Euphorians by The Euphorians

about

When everydayism meets highwayism in a mental battlefield

lyrics

Magpies fill the air
tawny deer is crouched in the tall dry grass
while the painted lines on the highway race past
I try to find my mind on the dotted line
somewhere between a shit-hole and paradise
And if I'd had the balls to roll the dice
I wouldn't be sitting here holding back the tears
in my eyes
See workin' for the Man was never the plan
but months became years and hopes became fears
and money ain't free and suddenly you see
the ending of the story and it ain't the way
it's supposed to be

And the body starts to crumble
the songs become a mumble

And my head is a balloon on a string bobbing fiercely in the wind
out the window while a mandolin plays on the radio
and who knew the sky could be so blue and the sun-dappled leaves on the pulsating trees could wash away the city and the shadow of the Man and help me remember who I am

I must have had a wicked childhood
I must have had miserable youth
but sometime in my wicked, miserable past
there must have been a moment of truth

And I'm too old and ugly to be cool and young
there's a million and seventeen songs I've sung
with my strap-on lung and my preacher son tongue but for everything I've done it seems I got nowhere
But I've tried to do things my way
while I keep dreaming of the highway and working for the Fridays and when people say "why Dave" I say
I don't know
I just go
and keep on keepin' on

I've tried to do things my way
I keep dreaming of the highway
and when people say "why Dave"
I say I don't know
I just go
and keep on keepin on

I keep on
I keep on
I keep on
rollin'
I keep on rollin'
I keep on rollin'
down the highway
